What We’re Looking for

We’re always looking for first-person stories in which farm and ranch folks tell about their own experiences and memories. At the moment, we’re especially interested in several specific kinds of first-person stories:

• Beginning on page 40 of each issue, we always run a story about how someone has accomplished a goal. Recently, we’ve had stories by a rancher in Colorado who “winterizes” her horses; a part-time farmer in Vermont, once a vegetarian, who now deals with myriad regulations to sell meat locally; a farmer who use workhorses rather than tractors, and not only thinks you should, too, but offers tips on how to go about it; a recent ag-school graduate who is working with her parents to change the way they do business on their 150-year-old farm so that it will support future generations; the trials, tribulations and triumphs of a young family struggling to survive on a small, barely viable organic produce farm.
  
  These stories offer helpful tips and inspiration to others in similar situations, and also reveal some of the author’s feelings and philosophy. If you can tell such a story in about 1,500 words, let us know. Don’t feel you have to be an accomplished writer—just send us note and raw material, and we’ll put it in story form then send it back to you for your okay.
• Stories about farm animals, whether a memorable milk cow, a pig with a personality, a happy hen that becomes a beloved family pet or any other story about lively livestock.

“AFTER LOTS of rain last spring, the sun came out,” says Margie Sweetland of Keene, California. “The day was so beautiful, I had to grab my camera. I snapped a photo (right) of two of our cutting horses enjoying the sunshine and spring grass in our front pasture.

“Their names are ‘Plumb’s Key to Texas’ and ‘Poco’s Dino Annie.’ My husband, Mike, and I call our place Skeeter Ranch.”

If you have a photo or story that captures some aspect of farm life, send it our way! Any material you want back should be accompanied by a self-addressed stamped return envelope.

When sending a photo that means a lot to you, it might be best to get a duplicate made and send that…accidents do happen, and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
