On the weekend of October 21, 2009, our Georgia diarist Kalie Hall and her teammates, Brandon Porter, Ethan Phillips and Katie Brown, headed to the 82nd National Future Farmers Association Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, to compete in the Career Development Event (CDE). The CDE gives teams the opportunity to demonstrate connections between classroom instruction and real-life scenarios.

Kalie’s team had the task of placing eight classes of livestock and then defending their decision with oral reasoning. The team also completed slaughter cattle grading, collaborated on a keep/cull team activity and took a written test.

By the end of the competition, Kalie’s team placed fifth overall, and Kalie was named the High Individual Scorer. She received a $600 scholarship that will go toward her college education. “The individual award was just a culmination of the encouragement of my teammates and coaches,” Kalie says.

After high school, Kalie hopes to pursue livestock judging at a collegiate level.
